What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs due to an imbalance in your blood glucose (sugar) levels. Insulin helps in regulating your body’s blood glucose levels. When you have diabetes, your body doesn’t effectively use this insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin, leading to an imbalance in glucose levels.

Diabetes in Canada

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in Canada. About 3,000,000 people in Canada (8.9% of the population) live with either type 1, type 2, or prediabetes and this number continues to grow. In 2021, the Government of Canada announced that a total of $35 million will be invested in diabetes research, prevention, and surveillance to help combat the rising number.

Gestational diabetes is usually tested for between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, although your doctor may recommend earlier testing depending on risk factors.

Symptoms:

Gestational diabetes does not usually show any symptoms. However, some women can develop the following symptoms:

    • Frequently Feeling Thirsty
    • Blurred vision
    • Frequent Urination
    • Urinary Tract Infection
